Matt Mulligan Explores Child Development Through an Insightful Metaphor in His Book “Tomatoes and Peppers” Was Displayed by ReadersMagnet
“Tomatoes and Peppers” is a metaphorical story about child development and the real and unseen challenges children face as they navigate the world around them.
Matt Mulligan’s book “Tomatoes and Peppers” was last exhibited by self-publishing and book marketing company Readers Magnet at the 2023 Los Angeles Times Festival of Books. The book trade fair took place last April 22-23, 2023, at University of California.
In “Tomatoes and Peppers,” Matt examines the challenges children face growing up, based on the opinions and assumptions of those around them, and other external factors. This book presents a metaphor that examines the relationship between children with differences and the world around them.
Raising children is like tending a garden. Each plant is unique as each is raised differently with a specific type of care given for each plant. Like plants, children’s successful growth and development can depend on different supports from child to child. In his book, Matt Mulligan uses the metaphor of the growth of plants in comparison with the growth of children. He uses “tomatoes and peppers” to provide focus on the differences and needs of neurotypical and neurodivergent children.
Like the tomatoes, Matt was born at 28 weeks. Growing up, he experienced challenges and difficulties. Matt has had 30 surgeries, 19 of those neurosurgeries, and was diagnosed with learning differences at 40. Based on his experience, Matt understands what it is to experience a neurodivergent journey through a typical world. The author’s deep hope is that this book can serve as a bridge of understanding between children with differences of all kinds and the adults charged with their care.
