Health and safety programs are critical for protecting workers as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that as recently as 2021, there were 5,190 fatal work injuries recorded in the country, with a worker dying every 101 minutes.

The National Safety Council (NSC) reports that preventable injuries are the fourth leading cause of deaths in the United States. To raise awareness and encourage actions to improve health and safety in the workplace, National Safety Month was established by the NSC back in 1996.

National Safety Month takes place each June and weekly topics for this year include:

  • Week 1 – Emergency Preparedness
  • Week 2 – Slips, Trips and Falls
  • Week 3 – Heat-Related Illness
  • Week 4 – Hazard Recognition

Health and safety programs are critical for protecting workers as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that as recently as 2021, there were 5,190 fatal work injuries recorded in the country, with a worker dying every 101 minutes. That same year, private employers reported 2.6 million nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses. This number included 1,062,700 nonfatal injuries and illnesses that caused a private industry worker to miss at least one day of work.

“These figures highlight the need to have effective health and safety programs in place to protect all workers,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “Also, under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, which created the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), employers have a responsibility to provide a safe workplace. From a financial perspective, OSHA estimates that employers pay almost $1 billion per week for direct workers’ compensation costs. This number doesn’t include the many indirect costs associated with workplace injuries and illnesses.”

Zimmetry Environmental is proud to support the efforts of National Safety Month. In Puerto Rico and throughout the Caribbean, Zimmetry’s industrial hygiene and EHS professionals provide consulting, testing, monitoring and training services to protect workers and to help companies and institutions comply with health and safety regulations.

Last year, Zimmetry sponsored an educational video about National Safety Month that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/ygdLjYfG8z0
