Author’s Biography
Cecil Clarke is currently a Real Estate Agent and an Insurance Agent, licensed in Florida. He studied Business Administration at West Indies College, and Techniques of Supervision & Personnel Management, at College of Arts, Science & Technology. He lives in Miami, Florida, with his wife, Rhona.
He puts God first in his life and looks to Him for sustaining grace and mercy. In his daily devotion he said: “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth…”
He was born in St. Mary, Jamaica and went to elementary school at Martin. He had a traumatic experience in school there, that affected his ability to read and also his ability to learn in general. So much that when he finished elementary school, he was hardly able to read. Then after about two years out of school, he went to a private SDA Church School. The teacher told him what he already knew. She said: “Cecil, you are very backward, but you can change that. You will just need to study hard.” He did, and before long he made great progress. Soon the girls in the class were no longer laughing at him as they did when he went there, not knowing anything.
He had a good teacher and within a short time he was preparing for the 2nd Year Jamaica Local Exam. He knew his stuff and the teacher even attested to that fact. But because he did not learn the art of doing the exam fast enough, he failed. Shortly thereafter, he went to West Indies College, Now Northern Caribbean University, intending to work his way through school. They had a High School and a college division. He was given a job in the Press, where he observed and read a lot and learned the Letterpress printing quickly. He soon mastered compositing and learned to operate all the Letterpress machines. He worked full time for two years and saved enough money and was ready to start High School, where he could go to classes in the morning and work in the afternoon.
The policy at the time was that working students could not get money from their account for books or uniforms. But he made a request, nevertheless. He was told that what he earned should remain in his account to pay tuition and boarding. His father was a farmer and he died when he was only 16 years old. He had no financial help from home. And so, he could not register for classes. Therefore, he left and took a printing job in the big city.
After a year he went back to west Indies College and applied for the job to run the Letterpress Department. He was hired. And one day as he was talking with the president of the College, he told him that he would eventually resign and go to school. He also told him that he had to do High School before going to college, and he was already 25. At which point he told him that there is a mature entrance exam that he could take. He did and passed it and was able to go to college.
As a staff member he was allowed to go to class for 6 hours per week for free. So, he registered and was studying Business Administration. But each time just before he left for class, the manager would come to his department and tell him the jobs that must be done, even though he was on top of his department. His workers respected him, and they finished the jobs on time. He trained them all. However, because he did not want him to tell the faculty that he was not doing his job, he stopped going to classes.
Shortly thereafter, he resigned and went to manage a Printing Company in the city. He got married and they had a son. The company sent him to do a course in Management at the College of Arts, Science and Technology. They bought a house and a car, and things were just working out fine. He also set up a restaurant that operated for a while.
They decided to go to the US, and he got a job with a Printing Company. They eventually became citizens. He even went and got his GED Certificate. And after some time, he decided to quit the printing business and he went and get his Real Estate License. He also got his insurance license, and he still works in both professions.
For closure to his traumatic experience in elementary school, he started a scholarship foundation. Namely, Suave Scholarship Foundation, Inc. He intends to contribute a certain percentage from the sale of his book to the scholarship fund. He looks forward to a generous patronage with the sale of his book and he will be most grateful. It is his prayer that all his readers will find the content of his book to be inspiring and informative.
