“A remarkable, hard-hitting personal story of trauma and perseverance.” Kirkus Review

Cynthia J. Giachino’s “Quiet. Fear.: An Autobiographical Novel” is a compelling fictionalized autobiography that centers on a young girl enduring the assaults and sexual abuse of her godfather. Lilly was born to a loving family. With her strong faith, she could play in the fields, woods, and on the river in the rural Midwest. It was a life people dream of, but not for Lilly. After giving birth to a son, her once parallel world of the past and the present splits in two. She found herself with one foot weighted down in the hidden underworld of terror and the other stuck on a merry-go-round of secrets.

“Quiet. Fear.” has received positive reviews from book review publications.

BlueInk Review said: “This is a detailed, unflinching story of abuse and the damage that follows, but also of her mind’s amazing ability to endure and heal. It is painstakingly plotted; the author skillfully moves back and forth in time – while keeping readers grounded at the moment. She also ably conveys Lilly’s emotions, moods, and fear. While dark and at times painful, the story is also balanced with hope and perseverance. “In sum, ‘Quiet. Fear.’ is a compelling tale that’s likely to engage and touch a wide audience.”

Mari Carlson of Foreword Review said: “A novel of extremes, ‘Quiet. Fear.’ moves from terrifying childhood assaults toward a story of healing and abuse prevention.”

She added: “Moving between Lilly’s therapy sessions and her dark memories, this is a story that’s concerned with healing. It covers Lilly’s work toward self-understanding—of her anger at her rapist; of the fears that she carries as a result of the trauma.

“The abusers’ schemes to isolate Lilly build up; they are juxtaposed to a climactic encounter with Lilly’s son. Lilly is prompted to disclose her secrets, and the novel becomes justice driven as Lilly shifts from being a survivor into being a heroine.”

“The author, writing in the third person, delivers an intimate portrait brimming with insight,” said Kirkus Review. “Giachino’s simple, direct prose skillfully conveys Lilly’s abuse and illuminates the psychological anguish that lasted decades.

“She likewise excels at describing those surrounding her, from her wonderful big brother, Anthony, to her callous aunt, Millie, who seemed to be aware of and indifferent to her lecherous husband’s crimes.”
