Carol Gault’s Beautifully Poetic and Photographic Picture Book Soon to Hit the Exhibit at the San Diego Union-Tribune Festival of Books 2023
Since she was young, Carol Gault has had a burning passion for wildlife photography. After an adventurous road through the worlds of both academia and graphic design, she’s finally come out with a photo book and complimented it with some poems that teach kids about the world’s wonderful reptiles. This book is now slated to exhibit at the San Diego Union-Tribune Festival of Books 2023.
“A poetically rocking reptile alphabet.”
The San Diego Union-Tribune will be hosting its own Festival of Books this August, and it’s always a wonderful opportunity for first-time authors. These include authors across a variety of genres and fields, whether it’s science, storytelling, self-help, and more.
One of them is Carol Ann Gault and her beautiful children’s book “Alligator to Zebra-tail.” It’s a light read with an alphabet scheme that’s also designed to teach children about the world’s many amazing reptiles.
From the well-known alligator to different snake species, such as the copperhead, each entry is paired with a verse that tells a fun fact about these scaly wonders. The picture in each entry is also a beautifully taken photograph personally picked by Gault herself.
Gault has been honing her photography skills since she was five years old, and this book is one of her most recent projects. For a time, she juggled it alongside earning her master’s degree in mammal ecology. But after taking some classes in graphic design and putting them into practice, she decided to take higher-level photography training at the Colorado Mountain College.
Today, she is a fully-fledged wildlife and landscape photographer. She’s very much excited about using her animal photos to teach children about the wonderful species of Earth’s animal kingdom. San Diego’s own Festival of Books is a great chance to introduce her work to even more young readers.
Visitors to the San Diego Union-Tribune Festival of Books can check out Carol Gault’s “Alligator to Zebra-tail” at the ReadersMagnet exhibit at the San Diego Union-Tribune Festival of Books. The festival will take place on August 19, 2023, at the University of San Diego, 5998 Alcala Park, San Diego, CA. Purchase a copy on Amazon.

Author Bio
At the ripe old age of five years old, with three cereal box tops, and 50 cents, Carol Ann Gault purchased her first camera. With the first roll of film, she learned how to hold the camera steady and relatively level. When that camera ceased to function, her parents let her take their old Kodak with a shutter that sounded like the horn of a Model T car and was off to Y camp taking pictures of friends and counselors. The Kodak Instamatic became her favorite tool in her teenage years and it wasn’t until her mid-twenties that she managed to buy a single lens reflex.
While she was in graduate school and working on a master’s degree, she worked part time in a needlework store and became a needlework designer. She achieved her master’s degree in mammal ecology and then had two children and learned about being a mammal first hand. The camera became a supplement to her career as an at-home biologist, a designer and a mom. Most of her picture taking was snapshots of children, flowers in the backyard and the occasional vacation trip. She had a book published Needlework Dragons and other Mythical Creatures with Van Nostrand Rheinhold. She took classes on graphic design and computer graphics and self-published several needlework instruction pamphlets.
As the perpetual student and moving to Aspen as a refugee from real life, she started taking my photography more seriously and attended classes with David Hiser, the faculty at Colorado Mountain College, and various workshops offered in the west. Using the biology, and design skills she picked up along the way, she is now a landscape and wildlife photographer. She has taught digital imaging and photography at the local Colorado Mountain College. Aspen Light Imaging is her company that produces note cards, magnets, laser prints and other gift related items from her photographs.
