Author Thomas F. McLoughlin Will Sign Copies of His Paleobotany Book at the 2023 Printers Row Lit Fest

Thomas F. McLoughlin will sign copies of his book “Atlas of Pennsylvanian (Carboniferous) Age Plant Fossils of the Central Appalachian Coalfields: Volume 2” at the 2023 Printers Row Lit Fest on September 9. 2023, 12:30 PM-1:30 PM at Printers Row Park, South Loop, Chicago, Illinois. The author’s book signing event is organized by self-publishing and book marketing company ReadersMagnet.

The Printers Row Lit Fest is an annual event that celebrates not only the written word but also Chicago’s publishing and literary legacy. The literary festival is organized by the not-for-profit Near South Planning Board and is the largest outdoor literary showcase in the Midwest, attracting over 100,000 visitors. The Printers Row Lit Fest features book exhibits, book signings, panel discussions, staged readings, and various other programs for adults, young adults, and children.

“Atlas of Pennsylvanian (Carboniferous) Age Plant Fossils of the Central Appalachian Coalfields” is a picture guide to fossil plants and a few fossil marine organisms found in close association with the coal measures in the Central Appalachian region.

The fossils are sorted by groups and the specimens sampling site locations are listed by coal seam horizon and geographic location. The author also provided short descriptions of each group of fossil types. This publication has been designed with the amateur (rock hound) as well as a virtual guide for the more advanced collectors. Explanation of the different groups of plants is as close to layman’s terms as possible. The book has 71 plates and over 300 pictures and illustrations, in which most are in full color.

Author’s Biography

Thomas F. McLoughlin earned his Bachelor of Science at Morehead State University in Morehead, Kentucky. In December of 1979, he completed his Master Thesis in geology at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, Kentucky. Then in June 1980, he joined the U.S. Department of Labor Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). He stayed with this agency as a geologist and coal mine inspector for almost 30 years collecting plant fossils in the coal mines and outcrops (road cuts) in southwestern Virginia. For approximately 26 years he taught Introduction to Geology courses at colleges in Cumberland, Kentucky, and Wise, Virginia. He started out in geology as a “rock hound” collecting rocks, minerals, and fossils. By the end of high school, McLoughin decided to become a geologist and attended college. His parents even insisted that he leave home because it was overtaken by his rock samples. During high school and college, he practiced lapidary work making jewelry from minerals and rocks.
