Respiratory Protection Week in Puerto Rico and Resources to Identify and Mitigate Exposure to Airborne Risks

Each year, respiratory protection makes the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) top ten list of the most frequently cited safety and health violations. This, despite the fact that millions of workers from across the country, and in a wide range of occupations, are required to wear respirators while performing various tasks.

Recognizing the vital role that respiratory protection plays, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) annually promotes Respiratory Protection Week to encourage proper respiratory protection practices. For 2023, the weekly observance takes place from September 5^h through the 8^th.

“Respirators, when used properly, can dramatically help to prevent occupational illnesses and deaths,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “On the islands of Puerto Rico, respiratory protection standards for most workers are enforced by the Puerto Rico Occupational Safety and Health Administration (PR OSHA). Federal OSHA enforces it for some workers not covered by PR OSHA. Compliance with PR OSHA and Federal OSHA respiratory protection standards not only protects workers, it also prevents costly noncompliance penalties.”
