Parenting Guide for Kids with Apraxia by Parent and Certified SLP Laura Baskall Smith Exhibited at San Diego Union-Tribune Festival of Books

“This is a really great place to start if you’re trying to understand Apraxia of Speech/Verbal Apraxia/CAS. Personally, I felt like our SLPs that we’ve worked with in the past didn’t really explain the disorder to us clearly. A lot of what I tried to research was overly technical for a mom who just wanted to know what our future might look like. Laura writes the book from the perspective of a well-informed parent.. …” – Lesley Littell

The 7th San Diego Union-Tribune Festival of Books abounded with a wide range of exhibits featuring newly published works. Among these were many books are references and guides for children with disabilities as well as advocacy for neurodiversity. When it comes to apraxia, the guide, “Overcoming Apraxia,” by Laura Baskall Smith was written from a perspective that is more unique than most.

Smith is a certified speech/language pathologist (SLP) who has been working in the Denver Metro area with parents of all sorts of neurodivergent children. However, she soon found herself in the same parenting position after the birth of her daughter.

Realizing that she now has both the advanced knowledge as well as the challenging experience of parenting a child with apraxia, she went and compiled all her insights into “Overcoming Apraxia.” With the help of self-publishing and book marketing company ReadersMagnet, Smith was able to have her book exhibited during the San Diego Union-Tribune Festival of Books.

Using plain language while drawing from vast, academic resources and the latest research, “Overcoming Apraxia” gives a basic, concrete plan to better prepare parents for tackling the challenges of this particular disability.

Smith is also particularly cautious against the still prevalent mentality of delaying testing. The book goes to great lengths to explain why such delays could be harmful (both for the child and the parents). For instance, it would mean that children would be denied necessary therapy for much longer periods, further complicating their situation.

It goes without saying that Smith has been very passionate about her advocacy, and she hopes having her book exhibited will mean more neurodivergent children will have access to the tools and resources they need to achieve great things.

“Overcoming Apraxia” is available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble. To learn more about Laura Baskall Smith’s advocacy and SLP consultation, visit her website at https://slpmommyofapraxia.com/.
