EPA Announces $58 Million to Reduce Lead Exposure from Drinking Water Sources in Schools and Childcare Facilities
EMSL Analytical provides laboratory testing services, sampling supplies and test kits to identify lead exposure risks from water, dust, paint, soil and other environmental samples.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced in July that $58 million in grant funding is available to protect children from lead in drinking water at schools and childcare facilities across the United States. The funds can be used for testing, compliance monitoring and lead in drinking water remediation projects.
This is the first time that activities that remove sources of lead in drinking water are eligible to receive funding through the Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation Act (WIIN). Lead remediation actions may include the removal, installation and replacement of internal plumbing, lead pipes or lead connectors, faucets, water fountains, water filler stations, point-of-use devices and other lead-free apparatus related to drinking water.
“Childhood lead exposure from drinking water has come under increasing scrutiny over the last several years,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “In response, a number of states have recently passed legislation requiring water sources in schools and childcare facilities be tested. Those actions and this funding announcement from EPA are all an important steps to mitigate lead exposure as children are particularly vulnerable to lead poisoning. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that no safe blood lead level in children has been identified.”
With a laboratories located across North America that offer lead testing services, EMSL Analytical is uniquely positioned to help in these efforts. EMSL provides testing services for lead and other heavy metals from water, soil, air, dust and other types of samples. They also offer all of the sampling supplies needed and even easy-to-use test kits to assess lead in drinking water, dust and paint chips. Several years back, EMSL sponsored an educational video about lead in drinking water that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/2kvtAcpw1MY
