On the one hand, the Frankfurt Book Fair is seen as another opportunity for major publishers to come together for a series of major licensing deals and industry forecasts. But on the other, it’s also an opportunity for thousands of authors to exhibit incredible stories both fictional and real. But beyond this pain, however, Marlene’s mind slowly drifts back to the memories of her life before the cancer. She thinks of her four boys, three on the path to success, while a fourth she laments for going astray.
As the chapters go on, though, older and more complex memories emerge as Tulloch continues to reflect on her life. It is here that readers can find a riveting recollection of a painful childhood. They learn of Marlene’s parents and how they struggled before passing away, leaving her in the care of a cruel grandmother.
Overall, it reads like a very in-depth biography despite being fictional. The book is Claudette’s recent attempt at writing prose after pursuing a passion for poetry and publishing her own collection. And like many authors at the Frankfurt Book Fair (Frankfurter Buchmesse), she hopes her switch proves an excellent read and share her work with a wider, more global audience.
