ReadersMagnet displayed over a hundred books during the San Diego Union-Tribune Festival of Books 2023, which took place at the University of San Diego, San Diego, CA, on August 19, 2023. The esteemed marketing company and platform for self-publishing authors showcased “The Raptor’s Grasp: An Abelove & Bradley Mystery” by Freya Smallwood.

“The Raptor’s Grasp” begins as the US economy is in meltdown. A cliffside “Black Saturday” celebration encouraging invitees to spend lavishly results in a baffling death. As widowed Dr. Bradley reengages with life by assisting Detective Abelove’s investigation, the overprotective detective’s case increasingly leads him to fear that the killer he seeks is someone whom in conscience he cannot arrest.

This intro to Freya Smallwood’s Cop&Doc Mysteries showcases human complexity through vivid characterization and compelling dialogue, making it a must-read for fans of multi-faceted detective stories. As those happenstance partners pursue the investigation, readers will enjoy becoming acquainted with neuroscientist Bradley and surfing champion Detective Abelove. Although lacking a college education, Abelove is both intelligent and intuitive. His emotional insights are complemented by the physician’s carefully reasoned curiosity; so that while solving the crime they increasingly respect one another and grow to relish time spent together.

As an undergrad at the U. of Michigan, Freya Smallwood won first prize for playwriting in the Hopwood competition. Later at UCLA, her MFA French farce received The Lucille Ball Comedy Award plus total production in the university’s theater season. When a group of professors creating a documentary hired her to revise their screenplay, their Disney producer told them, “You found a good writer.” Her first novel, Softwood, is a literary love story set in atmospheric northern Michigan.

Freya has become addicted to the fun of Tor Abelove and O. G. Bradley. Since all these books are standalone, she welcomes an offer of representation for just one. Her second Cop&Doc Mystery, Something Tricky Bad, has just been published. A third, The Cast Pearl, will appear in early 2024.
