Reflections on Mountaineering is a collection of one hundred thirty-eight Narrative-style poems that, among other things, examine human reactions to fear and awe, and contemplate the role of chance in human endeavor. While all the poems are Narrative in form, some are in rhyme, others are in blank verse (meter without rhyme), or are structured as “prose-poems.”
The Book relates much of what the Author learned about human nature and conduct under duress during his decades of climbing, either from personal experience, or from his interactions with his mountaineering instructors or peers.
Some poems address the performance of the ultimate Existentialist act -- that is, creating something out of nothing -- by reason of the intricate process of climbing itself. After all, a mountain is nothing but rock, snow, and ice until the climber transforms it into a reactive character in his own life’s play. Moreover, the Author explains how a climber infuses a mountain with human meaning by the very act of climbing it, thereby creating mountain lore, which enriches the human story.
The poems themselves strive to convey lucid, compelling stories with a moral or life-lesson, and are meant to be readily accessible by the public-at-large, not only by other mountaineers and other poets. Moreover, the Book addresses the so-called “hidden” truths that mountaineers are sometimes said to possess, and demonstrates how many of the challenges and dilemmas encountered in the mountain arena are substantially mirrored by those in everyday life.
Collectively, the poems may be regarded as a kind of “meditation” on the human condition itself as perceived in the context of exploring the limits of human understanding and achievement.
