"In a time of conflict, take the time to look beyond the news headlines and notice the average citizens. You’ll find yourself sharing more in common with those halfway across the world than you may have realized at first,"

“Papa’s Lessons: A Soviet Survivor’s Story” by Mariya Timkovsky will be presented at the 2023 Frankfurt International Book Fair (FIBF) this coming October 18 – 22, 2023, at Ludwig-Erhard-Anlage 1, 60327 Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The book tells the remarkable story of the author’s grandfather, Vladimir Naumovich Timkovsky, who overcame numerous challenges, such as losing his father during World War II, experiencing anti-Semitism, enduring poverty during the Soviet era, and facing multiple health issues.

“Papa’s Lessons” took multiple years to complete. Mariya collaborated with her father, Igor Timkovsky, to translate her grandfather’s semi-chronological life stories. She also cross-referenced his handwritten stories with the recordings, which are layered and complex. Her book serves as a reminder to endure adversity without bitterness.

The story of Vladimir Timkovsky will inspire its readers to be more empathetic and kind to others. Despite these obstacles, he never gave up on his aspirations and became a highly respected math teacher. His legacy extended from Leningrad to Siberia and eventually to New York City.

Mariya Timkovsky’s book aims to portray what life was like for an ordinary Russian survivor. “Papa’s Lessons” by Mariya has been described as a highly influential book that explores the themes of resilience and perseverance. Mariya’s readers were delighted by her tips on surviving anti-Semitism and highly recommended her book to Soviet and Jewish history students.

The Frankfurter Buchmesse, also known as the Frankfurt Book Fair, is a renowned international event founded in 1949.
