National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week and Protecting Children, Families and Workers in Puerto Rico

National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week (NLPPW) takes place this year from October 22^nd through the 28^th. The week of recognition is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

“Together, we can prevent lead exposure!” is the theme for this year’s NLPPW. The goal of the annual event is to bring together individuals, organizations, industry and state, tribal and local governments to increase lead poisoning prevention awareness in an effort to reduce childhood exposure to lead. This is an important task as the CDC reports that no safe blood level in children has been identified. Even low levels have been shown to affect a child’s learning capacity, ability to pay attention and academic achievement.

“Lead-based paints continue to be the most common source of exposure for most children,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “It was used in many homes, schools and buildings constructed before 1978 throughout Puerto Rico and the nation. Another source that has received considerable attention over the last several years is due to lead leaching from plumbing pipes and fixtures into drinking water.
