“What a great read, really takes you back the way it was in the old west; once you start reading it’s really hard to put down.” – Randall W. Fruit, Amazon Review

“No Lookin’ Back: True-to-Life Western Story” by Ted Riddle and Linda Riddle follows Thomas “Tom” Summers. It begins and ends in the wake of his death at 60. Tom, 16, enlists himself, along with his brother, John Summers, in the infantry. The brothers are soon separated. Tom is wounded and is in danger of losing a leg. Fortunately, a nurse brings him back to recovery. Tom has seen enough of the war and decides to find a place to build a home. He is told that a neutral Indian territory is 300 to 400 miles away. So, from Mississippi to Oklahoma, he finally settles in Camp Supply.

After hiding from and dodging the military scouts, surviving snake bites, and experiencing his first time with a woman, Tom begins a new life. He finds work as a blacksmith and learns new skills that let him thrive in the new place. There, he establishes his ranch, marries the love of his life, and raises his children. He meets different characters along the way that lead him to becoming a different person from when his journey began as a 16-year-old infantry soldier.

“The book touches upon familiar historical reference points, including Wyatt Earp, Dodge City, and General Custer, weaving edifying factual information in,” Joseph S. Pete of “Foreword Clarion” said in a review.

There are telling details about chuck wagons, hardtack, and bronco busting that animate its backdrop. Its prose is otherwise straightforward and clear, complementing the shifting settings.”

“An engaging read, rich in historical detail, color, and description,” said a review in BlueInk Review.

“The pacing is varied, with plenty of action and drama throughout.”

A review in Kirkus Reviews states that the novel “certainly feels authentic, moves at a fast clip, and introduces readers to some rich characters.”
