Lead poisoning is entirely preventable, but tragically many families, including those with young children, still live in homes with lead-based paints.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) recently announced it had awarded over $3.5 million to the Puerto Rico Public Housing Administration. The funds are meant to help protect local families from lead and other home health and safety hazards.

HUD is providing these resources to Puerto Rico and other state and local governments through its Lead-Based Paint Hazard Reduction grant program and its new Lead Hazard Reduction Capacity Building grant program to identify and clean up dangerous lead hazards and other health hazards in low-income families’ homes. These grants include millions from HUD’s Healthy Homes Supplemental funding to help communities with housing-related health and safety hazards in addition to lead-based paint hazards.

“Lead poisoning is entirely preventable, but tragically many families, including those with young children, still live in homes with lead-based paints,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “Shortly after announcing this funding, HUD reported additional resources were being released across the country to also address carbon monoxide, mold, moisture and other common exposure concerns in public housing.”

The building science and indoor environmental quality professionals at Zimmetry Environmental have been providing consulting, testing and inspection services to identify and mitigate these and other exposure risks in Puerto Rico and throughout the region. They have been offering these series for over 20 years to protect families, building occupants and workers. These resources also help to keep businesses, organizations and institutions in compliance with environmental, health and safety regulations.

Several years ago, Zimmetry sponsored an educational video about protecting children from lead poisoning that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/LkEqFhNDS-U
