“Missy Goes to Mississippi” is set during a California summer break, where Missy’s Mother received an emergency phone call for the family to travel to Mississippi to take care of her sick Father and Missy’s Grandfather. Seven-year-old Missy is excited to take her first airplane trip. She can’t wait to meet her Grandfather Percy and other family members.
“Missy Goes to Mississippi” tells the story of Missy traveling with her Mother and little Brother. Missy’s adventures include: new responsibilities, creativity, and youthful resilience. Missy has an infectious spirit and a vivid imagination.
In Biloxi, Missy and family are greeted by Tony who picks them up at the airport. As the days pass, Missy’s sick Grandfather Percy’s health improves. Missy and her Mother takes a walk to explore Biloxi’s Back Bay. During their journey, Missy finds and befriends a pitiful looking frog. She becomes very loving towards him. She named him “Old Sad Eyes.” With her vivid imagination she envisions him as a prince in search of his princess.
As Grandfather recovers, Missy’s Mother decides it’s time to make plans to return to California. Missy takes “Old Sad Eyes” back to where she found him. She puts him down and watches as he hops his “Old Sad Eyes” away. She can’t help but daydream about how happy they would have been as prince and princess.

Author R. Mikki Addison is a motivational speaker, community activist, mental health counselor, social worker, and owner of a small business called, ’For The Inside.” Mrs. Addison graduated from Thomas A. Edison High School. She graduated from California State University (CSUF) in 1987 with a BA in Communications. In 2008, She returned to CSUF in 1995 and received her Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW). For 4 years, she worked at Positive Attitude Outlook, a foster family agency.
In 1999, she was hired and worked for Fresno County at the Fresno County Jail for 7 1/2 years. She was a member of the Jail Psychiatric Services (JPS). In 2008, Mrs. Addison transferred to the Juvenile Justice Campus (JJC) as a Mental Health Clinician for Fresno County Behavioral Health. She retired in 2014, thus ending her employment with Fresno County.
