The memoir “This Tender Man - My Father’s Story” by Rich Nelson will be displayed by the self-publishing and book marketing company ReadersMagnet at the London Book Fair 2024. The three-day premier book exhibit will occur on March 12-14, 2024 at the Olympia Exhibition Centre, Kensington, London, UK. The London Book Fair is a global book publishing trade show that attracts industry professionals and exhibitors from 60 countries.
In “This Tender Man,” Nelson explores the journey of an ordinary man caught up in the extraordinary circumstances of war. “My father nearly died of malaria in the jungles of WWII New Guinea” is the opening line of the book. His father, Woodrow F. Nelson, served in the U.S. Army’s 1462nd Engineer Maintenance Company in the tropical Pacific during WWII, coming home damaged by war but committed to leaving the war behind and returning to work, starting a family and serving his community.
However, like many veterans, he never shared war stories with his son. Author Rich Nelson embarked on a journey to discover his father’s experience. The result is a heart-tugging memoir featuring the story of a Midwestern boy lovingly raised by Swedish immigrants, an adolescent coming of age during the early years of the Great Depression, a young adult whose innocence is shattered by war, a man selflessly committed to family and community in his post-war years, though haunted by the demons of war that followed him home, and a hellish descent into Alzheimer’s in his final years.
Nelson’s father carried the “Greatest Generation” characteristics - service, hard work, and humility - throughout his life. “This Tender Man” is a story of hope, love, and bravery. It is a testament to a son’s devotion to his father and a portrait of a courageous gentleman. The book also delves into Muskegon’s colorful historical and cultural tapestry.
