Cynthia Giachino’s Gripping Autobiographical Novel About Child Abuse Seen Displayed at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2023
Given the sheer range of books being exhibited, it’s not surprising that visitors to this year’s Frankfurt Book Fair encounter a number of books that boldly tackle difficult subjects. Cynthia Giachino is one author with a particularly riveting example in “Quiet. Fear.,” a novelization of her own various experiences with childhood abuse, its horrific cycle of secrecy, and the desperate pursuit of normalcy.
As with any massive book fair, the Frankfurt Book Fair, also known as Frankfurter Buchmesse, teemed with exhibits showcasing the latest publications that tackle many difficult and controversial topics for the sake of awareness. These included either guidebooks to addressing social ills or personal autobiographies from their survivors. Many of these books also included poems, short story collections, and novels that illustrate these issues.
Sitting somewhere between these categories is Cynthia Giachino’s own book “Quiet. Fear.” Described as an ‘autobiographical novel,’ the book tells the story inspired by Giachino’s own experiences with childhood trauma.
Its plot follows Lilly, a girl whose life starts peacefully enough. But one day, something happens, and “her past and present world was split in two.” Many years later, she gives birth to a son, who she must protect at all costs from the terrible truths of the past.
The book is a deep, psychological exploration of the cycle of secrecy surrounding childhood trauma, as well as the gnawing, silent fear that victims carry at all times. Aside from Giachino’s own experiences, it also draws upon her background in education and psychology. For over 30 years, she was dedicated to teaching children and young teens. Writing this book was a life-long goal in the hopes of bringing awareness of child abuse to readers.
With the help of ReadersMagnet, a book marketing and self-publishing company, she continues to spread this awareness by showcasing her work at large book fairs such as the Frankfurt Book Fair.
