“A Guide to Pennsylvanian (Carboniferous) Age Plant Fossils of Southwest Virginia” by Thomas F. McLoughlin was showcased by the self-publishing and book marketing company ReadersMagnet at the 2023 Frankfurt Book Fair. The book trade fair took place at the Frankfurt Trade Fair grounds in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, last October 18-22, 2023.

ReadersMagnet helps independent and self-published authors increase their visibility, boost sales of their books, connect with their audience, and interact with fellow authors through book exhibits at national and international book events. One such book event is the Frankfurt Book Fair, also known as Frankfurter Buchmesse. This year’s fair was attended by more than 215,000 people.

Thomas F. McLoughlin’s “A Guide to Pennsylvanian (Carboniferous) Age Plant Fossils of Southwest Virginia” is a picture guide to fossil plants and a few fossil marine organisms found in close association with the coal measures in Southwest Virginia. McLoughlin sorted the specimens by groups. The specimens’ sampling site locations are also listed by coal seam horizon and geographic location. The book also includes short descriptions of each fossil group, making it easier for geology and fossil enthusiasts to follow through.

This book is designed for the amateur (rock hound) as well as a virtual guide for more advanced collectors. The explanation for each plant group is written as close to layman’s terms as possible. It contains 57 plates and over 280 illustrations, of which the majority are in full color.

Rock collectors and fossil enthusiasts should get a copy of Thomas F. McLoughlin’s “A Guide to Pennsylvanian (Carboniferous) Age Plant Fossils of Southwest Virginia” on trusted book-selling websites, such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and ReadersMagnet Bookstore.

Author’s Biography

A Bachelor of Science degree was earned while attending Morehead State University in Morehead, Kentucky. In December of 1979, I completed my Master Thesis in geology at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, Kentucky. Then in June 1980, I joined the U.S. Department of Labor Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). I stayed with this agency as a geologist and coal mine inspector for 28 years collecting plant fossils in the coal mines and outcrops (road cuts) in southwestern Virginia. For approximately 26 years I taught introduction to geology courses at colleges in Cumberland, Kentucky, and Wise, Virginia. I started out in geology as a “rock hound” collecting rocks, minerals, and fossils. By the end of high school, I decided to become a geologist and attended college. Actually, my parents insisted that I leave home because it was overtaken by my rock samples. During high school and college, I practiced lapidary work making jewelry from minerals and rocks.
