Hugh Patrick Mayes, Autobiography: “Squeaking Wheels of Comans Well, Sussex, Virginia”
A Testament of Faith and Courage
In the heartwarming and inspiring autobiography, “Squeaking Wheels of Comans Well, Sussex, Virginia,” Hugh Patrick Mayes, the pastor of Shiloh Baptist Church and the longest-living resident of Comans Well, takes readers on a journey through his life in Sussex County during the 1950s and 1960s. Part Christian biography and part historical narrative, Mayes reflects on his experiences, challenges, and unwavering faith in God.
He begins his narrative with a powerful analogy: “I have always heard that the squeaking wheel is the one that gets oiled.” This sets the tone for the book, emphasizing the ups and downs of life and the need for God’s healing power and guidance. He shares his gratitude for the divine touch that has oiled and healed his life, a theme that resonates throughout the narrative.
The book centers on the author’s remarkable courage highlighting his faith as a source of strength in the face of numerous challenges—from early health struggles to a stabbing incident in 2015. Born in 1948, he refers to himself as the “squeakiest wheel of all,” drawing on the belief that the squeaking wheel receives the most oil. Through his faith, he has found the oil needed to navigate life’s adversities.
While offering a glimpse into his journey, the book also serves as a historical account of life in Sussex County during the mid-20th century. The Sussex County Historical Society notes that it provided an important lesson to the region during the 1950s and 1960s, adding depth to the narrative more than just a testament of faith.
Hugh Mayes expresses gratitude to Gary M. Williams for his assistance in recalling the history of Comans Well. He acknowledges Williams’s book, “Sussex County, Virginia: A Heritage Recalled By The Land,” as a valuable source that helped organize dates and events. He also highlights Williams’s role as the Clerk of the Circuit Court since 1976, commending his skill in researching county records to reveal its history.
His purpose extends beyond personal reflection; he aims to share the lessons he has learned and the healing power of faith. Excerpts from the book emphasize the transformative impact of individuals and events in Mayes’s life, illustrating how God’s leadership has shaped his journey.
“Squeaking Wheels of Comans Well, Sussex, Virginia” is more than a memoir—it is a testament to the power of faith, the courage of the human spirit, and the rich history of Sussex County.
