J. Marcelo Baqueroalvarez’s Comprehensive Guide to Combatting Authoritarian Trends with Honed Critical Thinking Set to Exhibit at the LATFOB 2024

Every year, the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books assembles hundreds of authors for a series of talks on pop culture, America’s marketplace of new ideas and trends shaping up the publishing industry. It’s also the site of numerous book exhibits featuring the work of many authors who want to expand their reading audiences.

Dozens of newly published authors are already getting their spots in these exhibits for next year’s festival. One of these is J. Marcelo Baqueroalvarez, a passionate arts entrepreneur who nonetheless has very serious lessons to share in his new book “Authoritarianism & Propaganda: The Puppet Master Tools.”

Baqueroalvarez is the founder of the website Half Life Crisis where he and his daughter share a variety of artistic and literary pieces, all often inspired by their nuanced observations on America’s present cultural climate.

He takes the very same approach in “Authoritarianism & Propaganda,” which he hopes will serve as a crash course to critical thinking and recognizing the very dangerous realities that are steering many societies around the world towards embracing authoritarianism. Baqueroalvarez also draws upon insights from his previous experience in the U.S. Navy, where he rose to the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer. Using carefully crafted messaging, he hopes his book will challenge anybody to start re-assessing their approach to hot-button issues regardless of their political leanings. His historical analysis demonstrates how authoritarianism can come from anywhere and from any mix of best intentions if a society allows it.

J. Marcelo Baqueroalvarez was born in San Francisco de Quito, Republic of Ecuador. After moving to the United States in 1995, he enrolled and graduated Fort Lauderdale High School and subsequently college at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale with Magna Cum Laude in 1999. Simultaneously, he worked in video production and multimedia with his family until 2003 when he enlisted in the United States Navy.

During his tenure in uniform, he traveled the world and was stationed at several commands, including USS SEATTLE (AOE-3), USS LAKE ERIE (CG-70), USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN-72), USS COLE (DDG-67) and additional commands on shore and overseas. He rose to the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer.

During his time in the Navy, he met his wife, Alicia, and they welcomed to the world their daughter, Samantha. Marcelo is an avid lover of the arts, particularly in music, graphic art, photography, videography, and writing.

He uses his unique leadership style to nurture his peers, subordinates, and seniors, hoping to inspire and bring team cohesion. In 2013, he founded BeeZee Vision, LLC™ as an opportunity to expand his artistic acumen. He also started the Half Life Crisis™ project where he shares his unique points of view for posterity, doing what he loves the most which is stating facts.
