David Corbett’s Immersive Military Murder Mystery Exhibited at the Guadalajara International Book Fair 2023
The Guadalajara International Book Fair 2023 featured a wide range of book exhibits featuring the work of authors who use their unique backgrounds to tell the most intriguing tales. In the case of David Corbett, it’s the background of a retired U.S. Marine Corps pilot. His familiarity with life both in the Corps and in the jets is all very evident in his mystery novel “A Good Marine’s Murder.” Fans of the genre got to check out his very immersive work during this year’s fair.
“Having served under the author in the Marine Corps when he was the CO of VMA 542, I really enjoyed how he developed the story to include intrigue woven with the reality of being at Cherry Point. It brought back great memories including the flying and sailing around Cherry Point. Great storyline that kept me wanting to read the next page all the way to the end! Even a non pilot will appreciate the detail he used to describe and set up this thriller.” - Gary Pheasant
As the largest book fair in the Americas, particularly the Spanish-speaking world, the Guadalajara International Book Fair 2023 was filled with exhibits showcasing books from all around the region right alongside an equally wide selection of works from international authors. Many of these authors come from very rich backgrounds that allow them to give very unique takes on popular genres.
A great example would be David C. Corbett, a retired Marine Corps pilot who published a murder mystery, “A Good Marine’s Murder.” The book was displayed at the book fair by ReadersMagnet, a self-publishing and book marketing company.
“A Good Marine’s Murder” follows Colonel Dan Breakheart, a Marine Air Wing Safety Officer investigating the tragic death of his friend Colonel Jack Adams. Adams was piloting an AV-8B Harrier when something went wrong, leading to a devastating crash in the North Carolina bean fields.
Breakheart finds clues with the aid of a wide cast of characters, from Adams’ wife to the resident NADEP engineer. What many readers have found remarkable is how each character reflects Corbett’s strong familiarity with life as a Marine Corps pilot.
Corbett retired from the Corps in 1990 as a colonel himself. Over a span of 20 years, he has flown in a number of the most decorated fighter jets in modern military history. This included the A-4 Skyhawk, the F-9 Cougar, and of course, the AV-8B Harrier featured in his novel. His service had even earned him the Distinguished Flying Cross.
In 1968, he began writing professionally in a number of regional magazines as well as putting out occasional safety articles for the Navy. Eventually, he considered writing his own book that showcased his expertise and his memories from his time in service. Thus, “A Good Marine’s Murder” was born.
“A Good Marine’s Murder” by David C. Corbett is available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and ReadersMagnet Bookstore.

Author Bio
David C. Corbett retired from the U.S. Marine Corps in 1990 as a full Colonel. During his twenty-eight year career of flying fighter jets, which included the F-8 Crusader, A-4 Skyhawk, F-9 Cougar, and for the last seventeen years the AV-8 Harrier (Jump-Jet), he also held five commands: a AV-8 Harrier squadron, a Marine Air Support Group, and a Marine Air Ground Task Force. Colonel Corbett spent two tours in Vietnam, one flying the F-8 Crusader and the other flying Cobra gunship helicopters. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross while flying a mission into North Vietnam.
He began writing professionally in 1986 for a regional magazine, “Carolina Cursing.” It was in his early writing career that he appeared in “Naval Proceeding,” with an article on the use of the AV-8 in a combat scenario. He was also published several times in the prestigious Navy Air Safety Publication, “Approach.”
Beyond his flying abilities, Corbett is an avid sailor, which led to having articles published in a variety of sailing oriented magazines. This led to a position as an associate editor for “Coastal Cruising” magazine, where he had his own byline.
Now fully retired, living in North Carolina, near the Marine Corps base from which he flew so many wonderful years, he enjoys life with his loving wife, Donna.
