Kerry Novick, Accomplished Figure Skater Turned Author, Glides into Literary Success with “Svetlana’s Ring”
A Tale of Triumph and Sacrifice on the Ice
"The ice felt harder than usual, which meant it was harder to dig in,"
Kerry Novick, once a competitive figure skater in the dazzling Ice Follies and Holiday On Ice worldwide touring shows, has now glided into the enchanting world of storytelling. Drawing inspiration from her own experiences and fueled by a desire to fill a void in literature, she brings us her debut novel, “Svetlana’s Ring.” This narrative unfolds the challenges faced by Brianna Nolan, a once-promising figure skater, whose destiny takes a mystical turn when she discovers a ring that connects her to the mysterious story of long-ago Russian Champion Svetlana Terasova.
Follow Brianna Nolan, a young skater, as she faces the challenges of growing up, with puberty posing obstacles that could crush her ice-skating dreams. When Brianna’s father gifts her a ring once worn by the illustrious Svetlana Terasova, her world takes an unexpected twist. The ring unlocks glimpses of Svetlana’s life in her dreams and on the ice, offering Brianna a newfound courage that leads to a devastating fall. As the narrative develops, readers are drawn into a journey marked by passion, sacrifice, and the determined spirit of a young athlete.
In “Svetlana’s Ring,” The author creates a narrative that goes beyond the glitz and glamour of figure skating, looking into the sacrifices made by athletes to pursue their dreams. The author aims to impart valuable lessons about courage, determination, and the unforeseen consequences of the choices we make.
From the phrase: “The ice felt harder than usual, which meant it was harder to dig in,” readers can derive a lesson about adapting to challenging circumstances. The metaphor of the harder ice symbolizes facing tougher conditions. The lesson may emphasize the importance of perseverance, resilience, and the need to adjust one’s approach when confronted with difficulties. In the context of the story, it could also imply that sometimes, external factors beyond one’s control may become obstacles, and finding a way to overcome or navigate through them is crucial for success. This becomes abundantly clear when Brianna realizes Svetlana’s obstacles in cold-war Russia went far beyond skating ability, while Brianna’s only obstacle to success was getting in her own way.
To feel the thrilling highs and emotional lows of Brianna Nolan’s journey, readers are encouraged to grab their copy of “Svetlana’s Ring” and engage with this narrative. Kerry Novick’s skillful storytelling encapsulates the spirit of the figure skating world and elevates it into a story of timeless themes. Don’t overlook the opportunity to step into a world where dreams soar, and sacrifices shape destiny.

About the Author
As a competitive figure skater in her pre-teen and teen years, Kerry (McIntyre) Novick was surprised that there were so few novels about competitive figure skaters, and those that she found appeared to written by authors who had never skated competitively. She set out to change that. After high school, Novick turned professional and toured with Ice Follies & Holiday On Ice Combined Shows, Holiday On Ice Europe, and Disney On Ice. After a six-month engagement with an ice show in Japan, she went on to receive a degree in Japanese Language and Literature from the University of Massachusetts and a Master of Arts in East Asian Studies from Cornell University. She took writing courses throughout college and later at Gotham Writer’s Workshop in New York City, always with an eye to becoming an author. She went on to have a 25-year career in the distribution and development of children’s television programs, where she honed in on the art of storytelling for children and young adults. Svetlana’s Ring is her first novel.
