Infection Control Resources to Protect Building Occupants from Norovirus and Other Pathogens
CTSI provides infection control and indoor environmental quality testing, consulting, and training services to identify and mitigate exposure risks to a wide range of contaminants in the built environment.
Norovirus is very contagious and spreads easily and quickly in different ways.
People of all ages are susceptible to getting infected and sick with norovirus. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is the leading cause of vomiting and diarrhea, and foodborne illness in the United States. The agency also warns that infection with one type of norovirus may not protect an individual against other types.
Norovirus is very contagious and spreads easily and quickly in different ways. For example, people can get norovirus by accidentally getting tiny particles of feces or vomit in their mouth from a person infected with it. CDC shares that one can get norovirus by:
- Having direct contact with someone with norovirus, such as by caring for them, sharing food or eating utensils with them, or eating food handled by them.
- Eating food or drinking liquids that are contaminated with norovirus.
- Touching surfaces or objects contaminated with norovirus and then putting unwashed fingers in one’s mouth.
“Fortunately, there are ways to test surfaces and other environmental samples for norovirus to identify the source of an outbreak or to help assess the effectiveness of cleaning and disinfection procedures,” said Frank Selamie, President of CTSI. “To support infection control programs, CTSI proudly offers buildings assessments, testing, monitoring, consulting, and training services to identify and mitigate exposure to norovirus and many other pathogens.”
CTSI also recently sponsored an educational video about norovirus and identifying exposure risks that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/jHFBXqtlHtU
