Infection Control Resources in Puerto Rico to Identify Norovirus and Other Pathogens in the Built Environment
Zimmetry Environmental provides indoor environmental quality testing, consulting and training services to identify and mitigate exposure risks to a wide range of viral, bacterial and fungal contaminants.
The good news is there are ways to test surfaces and other environmental samples for norovirus to assess the effectiveness of cleaning and disinfection procedures or to help identify the source of an outbreak if one has already occurred.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), norovirus is the leading cause of vomiting and diarrhea, and foodborne illness in the United States. The agency also warns that infection with one type of norovirus may not protect an individual against other types.
Norovirus is a very contagious virus that spreads easily and quickly in different ways. To give an example, one can get norovirus by accidentally getting tiny particles of feces or vomit in their mouth from a person infected with norovirus. CDC also shares that people can get norovirus by:
- Having direct contact with someone with norovirus, such as by caring for them, sharing food or eating utensils with them, or eating food handled by them.
- Eating food or drinking liquids that are contaminated with norovirus.
- Touching surfaces or objects contaminated with norovirus and then putting unwashed fingers in one’s mouth.
“The good news is there are ways to test surfaces and other environmental samples for norovirus to assess the effectiveness of cleaning and disinfection procedures or to help identify the source of an outbreak if one has already occurred,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “In Puerto Rico and across the Caribbean, Zimmetry Environmental is dedicated to identifying and mitigating indoor exposure risks to norovirus and other pathogens. Our experts provide infection control, industrial hygiene and indoor environmental quality testing, consulting and training services. These resources can be instrumental in safeguarding building occupants, especially in places with vulnerable populations, such as hospitals and long-term care centers.”
Zimmetry also recently sponsored an educational video about norovirus and identifying exposure risks that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/jHFBXqtlHtU
