The Los Angeles Times Festival of Books showcases the beauty of literature and culture, bringing together noteworthy books and exciting activities for all attendees. ReadersMagnet, an esteemed platform for self-published and independent authors, will exhibit “Daughters on Duty: A Caregiver’s Guide to Managing Medical Matters” by Jackie McDaniels at this year’s Festival, which will be held on April 20-21, 2024, at the University of Southern California Campus, Los Angeles, USA.
“Daughters on Duty” is a collection of shared experiences and lessons learned by a caregiver looking after her elder loved ones. She first took care of her in-laws and later her mother, who went through multiple medical crises involving emergency room visits, hospital admissions and discharges, and medication management. The author discusses considerations in choosing the options for ongoing care after a hospital stay and handling that threshold when “home alone” is no longer a safe place for one’s elderly charge.
Readers will discover the right questions to ask in case of a crisis call from an aging loved one and know when to call 911. They will learn about the value of staying calm in a medical emergency and how this benefits their loved ones when they are ill. The book also guides the proper legal documents and authorizations that allow caregivers to manage their loved ones’ medical care confidently and understand their loved ones’ wishes.
“Daughters on Duty” further explains how to prevent medication mistakes and discover easy ways to keep an accurate list of prescriptions before and after a hospital stay. It emphasizes the importance of support as a caregiver with time out for self-care and other family life. Finally, the book provides multiple resources for outside help to keep one’s elder in their home as long as possible.
“Daughters on Duty: A Caregiver’s Guide to Managing Medical Matters” by Jackie McDaniels was suggested for reading as part of a syllabus for an Assisted Living Facility Management course at Washington State University. Author
Jackie McDaniels lives in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, with her husband Mike, who has been by her side for thirty years. They have two adult sons, four grandsons, three great-grandchildren and her dog Sophie who was rescued from the Humane Society.
They spent a few years taking meals and doing errands for Mike’s parents until they needed to move to an assisted living situation because they needed more care than Mike and Jackie could handle while working. Jackie had already reduced her employment hours to accommodate their needs.
During the three years from the time they left their home and their passing in 2001 and 2003, they moved from independent apartments at a facility to assisted living rooms to nursing homes. In between, they were both in and out of the hospital numerous times. All of these experiences taught Jackie lessons she wanted to share with others.
Her experience with Mike’s parents helped her when she moved her mother to her town after her father’s untimely death from an accident with his riding lawnmower. Jackie’s mother was able to live in her own home with help from Jackie and home healthcare workers for several years before moving to assisted care. The medical challenges Jackie dealt with while caring for her mother included insulin-dependent diabetes, macular degeneration that left her legally blind and urinary issues that resulted in recurrent infections. Jackie has shared her experiences so others have a guide on their journey.
