CBC/RADIO-CANADA Celebrates 288 Canadian Screen Award Nominations

CBC original dramas and comedies earn 77 nominations led by SORT OF, WORKIN’ MOMS, PRETTY HARD CASES, SON OF A CRITCH, ESSEX COUNTY, MOONSHINE and RUN THE BURBS including Best Drama Series nominations for ESSEX COUNTY and PLAN B; Best Comedy Series nods for SON OF A CRITCH and WORKIN’ MOMS; and Best Sketch Comedy Series nomination for THIS HOUR HAS 22 MINUTES

CBC/Radio-Canada films earn 66 nominations led by Matt Johnson’s BLACKBERRY - now the most nominated film ever in CSA history - Ariane Louis-Seize’s HUMANIST VAMPIRE SEEKING CONSENTING SUICIDAL PERSON, Pier-Philippe Chevigny’s RICHELIEU, Fawzia Mirza’s THE QUEEN OF MY DREAMS, Pascal Plante’s RED ROOMS | LES CHAMBRES ROUGES, Henri Pardo’s KANAVAL, Monia Chokri’s THE NATURE OF LOVE | SIMPLE COMME SYLVAIN, Reem Morsi’s QUEEN TUT and Sophie Dupuis’ SOLO

CBC KIDS garners 17 nominations led by AUNTY B’S HOUSE
 

CBC SPORTS receives six nominations including four for CBC SPORTS PRESENTS

CBC/Radio-Canada and its creative and production partners have received 288 nominations from the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television for the 2024 Canadian Screen Awards, reflecting the public broadcaster’s commitment to Canadian content, creators and communities. The awards will be presented during Canadian Screen Week, May 28 through 31, 2024, culminating on May 31 with THE 2024 CANADIAN SCREEN AWARDS broadcast show, an hour-long special hosted by comedian Mae Martin that promises an innovative blend of unpredictable, emotional award-show moments and unprecedented access to nominees and Special Award winners, offering audiences a celebratory look at the best in Canadian film and television. The broadcast show will air on Friday, May 31 at 8 p.m. (9 AT, 9:30 NT) on CBC and CBC Gem.

Highlights of CBC/Radio-Canada’s Canadian Screen Award nominations include the following:

●        CBC NEWS received 27 nominations in 20 categories including seven nominations for THE NATIONAL, the most nominations for any news program, and nods for THE FIFTH ESTATE (2) and MARKETPLACE (2). FAST channel CBC NEWS EXPLORE received four nominations, CBC NEWS NETWORK received two nods, and CBC regional news programs received eight nominations in five categories for excellence, in Vancouver (2), Winnipeg (2), Calgary (1), Montreal (1), Newfoundland and Labrador (1) and Toronto (1). CBC News original BEING BLACK IN CANADA: FRIENDS AND ALLIES received a nomination for Best Web Program or Series, Non-Fiction, and CBC Indigenous series TIME TO EAT was recognized for Best Lifestyle Program or Series.
 

●        CBC SPORTS received six nominations, including four nods for its weekly program CBC SPORTS PRESENTS and one each for digital productions KNUCKLE HOP ARCTIC WINTER GAMES and SOCCER NORTH LIVE - MEN’S AND WOMEN’S WORLD CUP. 

●        CBC’s original scripted programming earned 105 nominations, including Best Drama Series nominations for ESSEX COUNTY and PLAN B; Best Comedy Series nods for SON OF A CRITCH and WORKIN’ MOMS; and Best Sketch Comedy Series nomination for THIS HOUR HAS 22 MINUTES. 

○        Comedy: SORT OF (18) including two nods for Best Writing and one for Best Direction, as well as Best Supporting Performer nominations for Amanda Cordner, Ellora Patnaik and Supinder Wraich; WORKIN’ MOMS (12) including nominations for Catherine Reitman, Dani Kind and Sarah McVie plus Best Ensemble Performance; SON OF A CRITCH (7) including Best Lead Performer nominations for Benjamin Evan Ainsworth and Mark Critch; THIS HOUR HAS 22 MINUTES (5) including Best Performance, Sketch Comedy (Individual or Ensemble) and Best Variety or Entertainment Special for THIS SPECIAL HAS 30 YEARS; RUN THE BURBS (4) including performance nominations for Andrew Phung, Ali Hassan and Jonathan Langdon; HANNAH GADSBY: DRY (2); THE NEW WAVE OF STANDUP (1) and WINNIPEG COMEDY FESTIVAL (1).

○        Drama: PRETTY HARD CASES (10) including two nominations for Best Lead Performer for Meredith MacNeill and Adrienne C. Moore plus Best Ensemble Performance; ESSEX COUNTY (6) including Best Ensemble Performance, Best Writing and Best Supporting Performer for Kevin Durand; MOONSHINE (4) including Best Direction and Best Supporting Performer for Emma Hunter; MURDOCH MYSTERIES (3); PLAN B (2); and SKYMED (2).

○        CBC GEM original scripted series are led by HOW TO FAIL AS A POPSTAR (5) with nominations including Best Web Program or Series, Fiction, Best Writing and Best Lead Performance for Adrian Pavone. I HATE PEOPLE, PEOPLE HATE ME has received four nominations including Best Web Program or Series, Fiction and Best Lead Performance for Bobbi Summers, while YOU’RE MY HERO has received two nominations. 

○        CBC KIDS has garnered 17 nominations, led by AUNTY B’S HOUSE with six nominations including Best Pre-School Program or Series and Best Lead Performer, Children’s or Youth for Khalilah Brooks. MITTENS & PANTS received three nominations including Best Performance, Animation, while BESTEST DAY EVER WITH MY BEST FRIEND received two, as did DINO RANCH including Best Pre-School Program or Series. MACY MURDOCH was recognized in the category of Best Children’s or Youth Fiction Program or Series, and JEREMY & JAZZY also received a nomination for Best Original Music, Animation. CBC KIDS NEWS also received two nominations for their video feature INDIGENOUS FUTURES: HOW THESE TEENS ARE RECLAIMING THEIR JOY including Best Web Program or Series, Non-Fiction. 

●        CBC’s original unscripted, arts and documentary programming has received 84 nominations including:

○        Unscripted & Arts: Six nominations for THE GREAT CANADIAN BAKING SHOW; five nominations for THE JUNOS 2023, including Best Live Entertainment Special and Best Host for Simu Liu; four nominations for CANADA’S ULTIMATE CHALLENGE including Best Reality/Competition Program or Series; four nominations for the second annual THE LEGACY AWARDS including Best Live Entertainment Special and Best Host for Keshia Chanté; three nominations for STILL STANDING including Best Host or Presenter, Factual or Reality/Competition for Jonny Harris; nods for 2022 SCOTIABANK GILLER PRIZE (2); BOLLYWED (2) including Best Factual Series; INDSPIRE AWARDS 2023 (2); RICHARD III (2); and single nominations for CANADA’S NEW YEAR’S EVE: COUNTDOWN TO 2023; FAMILY FEUD CANADA and CBC Arts’ HERE & QUEER.

○        CBC GEM original series BEST IN MINIATURE received three nominations, including Best Reality/Competition Program or Series; FARM CRIME received two nominations, including Best Web Program or Series, Non-Fiction; and TELLING OUR STORY was recognized in the category of Best History Documentary Program or Series. 

○        Documentaries: CBC and documentary Channel titles received a total of 45 nominations including 15 nominations for THE NATURE OF THINGS; six nominations for THE MAN WHO STOLE EINSTEIN’S BRAIN including Best History Documentary Program or Series; five nominations for groundbreaking series BLACK LIFE: UNTOLD STORIES and five nominations for MR. DRESSUP: THE MAGIC OF MAKE BELIEVE. OFFSIDE: THE HAROLD BALLARD STORY and TWICE COLONIZED each received two nominations, while THE COWICHAN SWEATER: OUR KNITTED LEGACY, ETERNAL SPRING (長春), INSIDE THE STATUE WARS, short doc series MI’KMA’KI, QUEEN OF THE DEUCE, STAR WARS KID: THE RISE OF THE DIGITAL SHADOWS, doc series STUFF THE BRITISH STOLE and doc feature SWAN SONG were each recognized with one.

●        CBC and Radio-Canada received 66 nominations for feature films supported by the national public broadcaster including CBC Films titles BLACKBERRY (17), receiving the most nominations of any film ever in CSA history, THE QUEEN OF MY DREAMS (5), QUEEN TUT (4), SOMETHING YOU SAID LAST NIGHT (2) and SLASH/BLACK (1). French-language films supported by Radio-Canada and recognized by the Academy include HUMANIST VAMPIRE SEEKING CONSENTING SUICIDAL PERSON | VAMPIRE HUMANISTE CHERCHE SUICIDAIRE CONSENTANT (12), RICHELIEU (6), RED ROOMS | LES CHAMBRES ROUGES (5), KANAVAL (4), THE NATURE OF LOVE | SIMPLE COMME SYLVAIN (4), SOLO (4) and THROUGH THE NIGHT | QUITTER LA NUIT (2).
