The Embassy Of Ukraine In The Republic Of Botswana Begins Its Mission

On 16 April 2024, in Gaborone, Republic of Botswana, the official opening ceremony of the Embassy of Ukraine took place in-country.

The Embassy was opened by the Special Representative of Ukraine on Middle East and Africa Mr Maksym Subkh and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Botswana, Mrs Liubov Abravitova. Dr. Lemogang Kwape, Minister of Foreign Affairs, was the Honorary guest at the opening ceremony.

Representatives of the Government of Botswana, the business community, together with members of the diplomatic corps accredited in Gaborone and the Ukrainian community were present at the ceremony, in addition to local media.

“I strongly believe that the establishment of the Ukrainian Diplomatic Mission in Gaborone will allow seamless and effective interaction between our countries and coordinate our stances on significant initiatives at the UN and other international institutions,” emphasized Maksym Subkh.

Ambassador of Ukraine to Botswana Liubov Abravitova, in her speech, stressed the necessity of tightening the relations between Ukraine and the Republic of Botswana and described numerous spheres of ongoing and prospective cooperation, in particular, joint coordination in [engaging with] international institutions, which after the opening of the new Embassy shall become more fruitful, effective and profitable for both parties. Also, Ambassador Abravitova mentioned the warm relations of both countries and joint unity for humanistic values and international justice.

Botswana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Lemogang Kwape would go on to stress the importance of opening the diplomatic mission of Ukraine in Botswana, which will give a new impetus to developing bilateral relations in all areas of mutual interest.

During the ceremony, Dr. Lemogang Kwape was informed about the resilience of Ukraine, and Russian attacks on critical infrastructure, received a personal letter from the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba, and an invitation to join the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy`s Peace Formula.

For reference: The Embassy of Ukraine in Botswana, opened as part of the expansion of Ukraine’s diplomatic presence on the African continent, became the 16th Ukrainian diplomatic mission in Africa.

Before the opening, the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of South Africa was in charge of relations with Botswana.
