EPA Announces $3 Billion for Replacing Lead Service Lines

Recently, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced $3 billion to help states and territories identify and replace lead service lines to prevent exposure to lead in drinking water. The funds are from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and are available through EPA’s Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF).

According to the EPA announcement:

EPA projects a national total of 9 million lead services lines across the country, based on data collected from the updated 7th Drinking Water Infrastructure Needs Survey and Assessment. The funding announced today will be provided specifically for lead service line identification and replacement and will help every state and territory fund projects to remove lead pipes and reduce exposure to lead from drinking water.

“This funding announcement is good news for all Americans as lead can cause a range of serious health issues,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “While lead is rarely found in source water, it can enter the water supply as it comes in contact with plumbing materials that contain it, this includes service lines. Lead can also leach from lead pipes in homes or buildings, as well as from solder, or from brass or chrome-plated brass faucets and fixtures, especially when hot water is involved.”
