Aida Waserstein’s children’s book “Motema’s Feast” will be displayed at the 2024 Printers Row Lit Fest

Where there is sunshine, there is also rain. Where there is hope, there is also pain. In life, there are ups and downs because there is also balance. Unfortunately, events are bound to happen at times.

For those who love a book that tells a story of hope and finding happiness in both the simple and grand things in life, get a copy of “Motema’s Feast: A Story About Refugee Families,” a children’s book by Aida Waserstein. The book centers on three different but also similar lives of the three friends from families who experience the refugee’s plight: Umeed, Matondo, and Tabassum.

Umeed, Matondo, and Tabassum are classmates in an ESL class, where they encounter the word “gratitude” during a spelling test that leads them to a brilliant plan. They come up with the idea of having a feast together to show gratitude for life.

The feast involves the three friends and their parents wearing their original countries’ clothing, decorating the table according to those countries’ practices, serving food from their families’ country of origin, and inviting their teacher, Mrs. Cohen. Mrs. Cohen is glad to see that her teaching has inspired the children to celebrate and be grateful, but she is also saddened at the memory of her loved ones’ experience of persecution.

Aida Waserstein is a retired Family Court judge who came to the United States as an unaccompanied minor under what later became known as the Pedro Pan program. The author graduated from Bryn Mawr College and the University of Pennsylvania Carey School of Law. Among other recognitions, she was inducted into the Delaware Women’s Hall of Fame in 2022.
