This funding is good news for Puerto Rico as there are a number of locations, including former industrial, manufacturing and even medical sites, across the islands that left behind hazardous materials.

Last month, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced five selectees to receive over $3.4 million to assess and clean up brownfield sites in Puerto Rico. These investments through EPA’s Brownfields programs will help transform polluted, vacant and abandoned properties into community assets.

According to the EPA:
Many communities that are under economic stress, particularly those located in areas that have experienced long periods of disinvestment, lack the resources needed to initiate brownfield cleanup and redevelopment projects. As brownfield sites are transformed into community assets, they attract jobs, promote economic revitalization and transform communities into sustainable and environmentally just places.

“This funding is good news for Puerto Rico as there are a number of locations, including former industrial, manufacturing and even medical sites, across the islands that left behind hazardous materials,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “These sometimes include asbestos, lead, PCBs and many other chemical exposure risks. It’s important that comprehensive outdoor and indoor environmental assessments be conducted to identify exposure hazards so they can be properly addressed. These actions help to protect workers performing demolition, remediation, renovation and construction activities, not to mention future occupants on these properties.”

Helping with these efforts are the building science, industrial hygiene and environmental, health and safety professionals from Zimmetry Environmental. They provide testing, monitoring, consulting and training services for biological, chemical and radiological exposure risks. Their experts are also well-versed in Puerto Rico’s regulatory compliance requirements for handling hazardous materials, and for protecting workers, the public and the environment.
