Agoda sees search interest rise following India’s decision to waive visa fees for Thai tourists

Digital travel platform Agoda has noted a 16% increase in accommodation searches from Thailand to India in the immediate days following the announcement by the Indian government to waive visa costs for Thai tourists. From July 1st until at least the end of 2024, Thai tourists looking to travel to India can apply for an India e-Tourist Visa at no cost.

Agoda’s insights suggest positive early signs for a potential rise in tourism between the two countries, now that it’s more convenient and affordable for Thai travelers to explore India’s rich cultural heritage, diverse landscapes, and vibrant cities. The policy change follows a move by the Thai government in November last year to waive the visa requirement for Indian tourists. Agoda previously reported Indians were increasingly searching for Thailand following that decision, with Bangkok becoming the most searched city by Indians on Agoda at one point earlier this year.

Agoda CEO Omri Morgenshtern spoke about the impact of visa policy relaxations during a visit to India earlier this year. “When the visa process is easy and when the flight capacity is there, it makes it easy for travelers to get out and explore new destinations. It’s a business of removing friction.” Thai nationals looking to travel to India will have to apply for e-Tourist visa through the official online portal and the e-tourist visa will be granted without any visa fee under this new arrangement.
