Pamela Roberts Lee’s Historical Retelling of Her Ancestor’s Pilgrim Trials Set to Display at GIBF 2024
In recent years, the Guadalajara International Book Fair has become a celebration of literature across the Americas, both north and south. For retired U.S. Trial Attorney Pamela Roberts Lee, it offers an exciting chance to showcase her family’s colonial history. Her book, The Darkness at Dawn, retells the travails and trials of her ancestor John Lee, as he confronts a scandalous dilemma that threatens his Puritan community.
“I enjoyed the book very much and after several chapters, hated to put down. I even recommended that my brother offer to his students on the reservation to encourage them to read because of the shortness of chapters and easy reading. Can’t wait for sequel.” - Shirley K. Adams
The Guadalajara International Book Fair is a massive, nine-day event that features more than the biggest names in South American publishing. Countless international publishers have now also started attending, making it one of the biggest book fairs in the Western Hemisphere.
For Pamela Roberts Lee, a retired U.S. attorney and history writer, the event presents a chance to share the story of her ancestors. Her book, “The Darkness at Dawn,” is a dramatic retelling of events experienced by her ancestor, John Lee, who sailed with a Puritan community to the port of Boston in 1634. The book’s central conflict is 13-year-old John witnessing a terrible theft and a traumatic threat to the life of his childhood friend, Grace Newell.
During the storm that ravaged the pilgrims’ ship, John witnessed the robbery of the community’s prized gold and silver chalice. The thief, Richard Hawkes, a murderous rake, threatened to kill Grace if John spoke of the incident to any soul.
The book then takes readers on a 40-year lifetime journey with John amidst a richly detailed backdrop of religious mania, revival, and the Indian wars. Despite it all, however, John remains haunted by his decision to conceal Richard’s crime and the powerlessness he feels as his wicked, unrepentant adversary only continues to gain wealth and infamy. It’s a book that vividly describes North America’s turbulent settlement period while touching on themes of justice, integrity, and the dilemma of moral compromises.
Those visiting the 2024 GIBF can easily find Pamela Lee’s “The Darkness at Dawn” on display at the ReadersMagnet exhibit at stand GG40 (GG38). The exhibit will be there from November 30 to December 5. The book fair itself will still be held at Expo Guadalajara. Copies are available online at major digital bookstores like Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Updates on Pamela’s ongoing book projects are available on her website at https://pamelarobertslee.net/.
