Three UK reveals nearly half of Gen Z book holidays based on social media posts
- Brits voted ‘Holibobs’ as the cringiest holiday social media caption, and ‘My happy place’ as the most appealing
- Nearly a third of people post their photos on the go and with Three’s new Go Roam around the World Extra customers can be snap-happy in over 160 worldwide destinations
As Dua Lipa drops 20 images from her latest holiday to Cornwall, Three UK has revealed how the nation capture holiday moments and the generational differences of how we use our phones while away.
Taking inspiration from celebrity holiday snappers, the study, conducted by Three, found that younger people are the most committed to getting the ‘perfect’ shot. Gen Zs take an average of 5.17 minutes to perfect their holiday photo, over three minutes longer than the quickest snappers Baby Boomers (1.86 minutes).
With most people using their mobile phone to capture holiday photos (85%), Three’s new Go Roam around the World Extra means customers can share their images in over 160 worldwide destinations.
And whilst most people take 2-5 photos to get the perfect picture, a quarter of Gen Z (26%) take over 10 shots to get one photo, with 8% taking over 30. One in three (36%) of over 60’s capture the moment in just one snap, arguably as they remember using classic film cameras which offer a limited 24-36 photos.
A smile is still the go-to holiday pose (84%), however nearly a third of Gen Zs (31%) are bringing back the much-loved peace sign.
The research highlighted that ‘views’ tops the list for being the most photographed and is also what most people want to see (57%) on social. But be sure to avoid the following captions, voted by Brits as the top 10 cringiest captions for your holiday snaps:
- Hollibobs (39%)
- Living my best life (32%)
- Life’s a beach (22%)
- Catch flights, not feelings (18%)
- Tan loading (13%)
- Be rude not to (13%)
- It’s 5 o’clock somewhere (12%)
- Holiday mode on (11%)
- Holiday dump (11%)
- Today’s office (10%)
Despite ‘Holiday dump’ being the ninth most cringey caption, nearly a quarter of Gen Zs (24%) chose this as their favourite with Dua Lipa also using the term ’Photo dump’ in her latest post.
In comparison, ‘My happy place’* was voted as the most appealing – perhaps influenced by Kim Kardashian’s holiday post last month with the same caption from her visit to India. And ‘Holiday vibes’ and ‘Paradise’ were in the top three.
Brits love capturing memories and staying connected with people at home. Three’s research found that the two biggest motivations for sharing holiday photos online is to look back on them at a later date (43%), followed by updating family and friends (34%). Many people can’t wait to share their snaps on the go, with 29% using their data to post photos abroad. However, nearly a third of Gen Zs (29%) prefer to savour all their favourite photos for when they get home.
No matter how Brits plan to capture their holiday, Three’s Go Roam offers data, minutes and texts in over 160 destinations. Find out more about Three Go Roam here: Go Roam | Roaming in over 160 destinations | Support | Three.
