Allen C. Dotson’s “The Relevance of Jesus’ Own Gospel” Receives Positive Reviews from Book Reviewers

The book The Relevance of Jesus’ Own Gospel: The Views of a Physics Teacher by Allen C. Dotson attempts to explain Jesus’ appearance after the crucifixion. It connects advances in science to the defense of the Christian religion’s validity. With the recent breakthroughs and discoveries in physics, there is still a very limited view of the real world in itself.

Kirkus Reviews described Dotson’s book as “a commendably scrupulous interpretation of some of the New Testament’s core messages.” The review publication also pointed out the author’s acknowledgment of his own Christian belief in being a physics teacher attempting to find the truth behind Jesus’ resurrection.

“Dotson effectively contends that Jesus’ teaching was not principally apocalyptic, but was rather meant to teach people how to live their earthly lives focuses on the ‘kindnesses of a compassionate heart,’” they added.

Kirkus Reviews concluded that the author’s position is “exegetically convincing and intellectually powerful; there is not one line of precipitous dogma here, not one strident proclamation.”

BlueInk Review also reviewed the book and said Dotson’s work is a “thoughtful and ultimately hopeful reflection on the Christian Gospels that translates Jesus’ teachings for modern readers.”

The review publication mentioned that Dotson is “careful not to position himself as an authority. The material is logically organized, and ideas grow and build persuasively.” They also commended the author’s tone as it is “sane and humane” and described his attitude as “deeply tolerant with a commitment to fairness in consideration of all points. Another statement describes Dotson as having “a loving respect for the message he believes Jesus taught.”

BlueInk Review thought the book is “an engaging, deeply thoughtful, personal exploration that can help modern Christians come to terms with their faith without sacrificing an equal commitment to the laws and facts of science.”

Author’s Biography:

Allen C. Dotson was born into a family in which the father was an industrial chemist, and his older brother would become a mathematics instructor at the university level, so it is not surprising that he turned out to teach physics at that same level. After obtaining a PhD degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he joined the physics department at Western Michigan University, thinking of staying up North for about four years. Seventeen(!) years later, he said goodbye to those frigid winters and accepted a position back in North Carolina at St. Andrews College (which soon became St. Andrews University). In those years up North, his religious perspective had become more liberal, and in fact, he had spent one academic year on a leave of absence, studying at a liberally inclined seminary. So, it is also not surprising that, after teaching physics at St. Andrews for about three decades, he started writing this book.
