Ron Tagliapietra’s Written Tribute to Famous 20th-Century Explorers Will Be Displayed at the Printers Row Lit Fest 2024

At the Printers Row Lit Fest, there is no small selection of books dedicated to teaching history (just as the event itself teaches the history of Chicago’s old printing houses). For author Ron Tagliapietra, the most exciting historical subject is the exploits of the world’s most adventurous explorers.

It’s why he wrote the well-received book “Great Adventurers of the 20th Century: Revised and Updated 2nd Edition.”

The title says it all. Inside, readers can see a compilation that features nineteen different adventurers, explorers, and engineers who made their mark charting the parts that remained unknown during the 20^th century. These include the great expeditions of Sir Edmund Hillary, the first climbers to the peak of Everest. They’ll also learn more about Jacques Piccard, the man who developed the first bathyscaphe that would reach the deepest bowels of the Marianas Trench.

All of these are regaled with the passion and attention to detail that shares Tagliapietra’s own reverence for these incredible pioneers.

It’s a passion that comes not only from his reading of their history as a teen but his own love for outdoor adventuring. He has spelunked in the Illinois Caverns, snorkeled in Hawaii, and skydived in Arizona. And equipped with a background in education, he soon came to love writing guidebooks on America’s many natural places of wonder.

In his teens, Ron Tagliapietra’s favorite books were about Thor Heyerdahl’s raft across the Pacific on “Kon-Tiki” and “Hillary at Everest.” These led him to his own adventures: skydiving in Arizona, spelunking in Illinois Caverns, rafting the Chattooga River, and snorkeling in Hawaii. His favorite climbs are Mt. Rainier in Washington, Longs Peak in Colorado, Mt. Lyell in California, and Mt. Thielsen in Oregon.

At thirty, he knew more famous firsts: the north and south poles, balloon the Pacific, climb the world’s 14 highest peaks and 7 Summits. By forty, he heard about 2 trips that sparked the book: first to kayak the Amazon and first to find a connecting passage making Mammoth Cave the world’s longest cave.

Ron holds a doctorate in education and has written many books including guides to waterfalls, “Waterfalls of the States,” and to the highest mountains in the Southeast, “The Southern Sixers.”
