At the Guadalajara International Book Fair, visitors can find the works of new authors from all across the Western Hemisphere. However, there are also a small number of them who have taken the courage to tell a difficult yet heartfelt story about their personal tragedies just to be in solidarity with others in similar circumstances.
Such is the story of Mary Kay Verhoff, a healthcare worker who practiced for 40 years. She has also been featured as a national speaker at a number of healthcare conferences. And for a good number of those years, she was wife to her wonderful husband Dan.
But gradually, she started noticing some troubling signs that her medical expertise could not allow her to ignore. Eventually, Dan was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, and she, in turn, had little choice but to serve as his caregiver.
The details of her experience began to be written down when she started journaling as a means to cope with the challenges. It was only very recently that she realized the topic was one that required much sharing and discussion.
The result is a book titled “Just Breathe: A Caregiver’s Journey Through the Depths of Dementia,” and it does not only present Verhoff’s rawest moments of life as a caregiver for a dementia patient. The book also showcases the dedication of a husband and wife, who took their marriage vows seriously and stuck through it all till the very end.
