From Devil’s Prisoner to God’s Poet, Cowieyo Taylor Shares His Life Story to the World in Book Exhibit at Frankfurter Buchmesse

Cordell “Cowieyo” Taylor was a man who grew up with a troubled relationship with God. He was raised by a family who experienced much fiery tragedy, including the death of his own brother. Eventually, his difficult youth led to him falling in with the young crowd and getting sent to prison for five years. This experience eventually gave him the opportunity to really turn things around. Today, he’s a Christian poet set on using his spoken word in a book now set for the world’s largest book fair.

“My Lord I love you with all my heart, because you keep it out of the dark.”

On the one hand, the Frankfurt Book Fair, also known as Frankfurter Buchmesse, is a highly recognized international publishing event that brings together numerous publishers for a series of exhibits, seminars, and industry forecasts. On the other hand, this also makes it a great opportunity for authors from around the world to share their stories with countless fairgoers as well as delegates.

Hence, it’s an important moment for Cordell “Cowieyo” Taylor, a Christian poet who feels called by God to use writing to share his faith after a religious experience while he was still in prison.

He tells his story quite passionately in his new collection, titled “The Lord is My Inspiration: For God’s Nation.” Written in a free, spoken word style, Taylor’s poems offer glimpses of how his faith had helped during his troubled life and how Jesus taught him what real love was.

Taylor grew up a Pentecostal and in a considerably pious family. Still, this same family was often beset with tragedies. Prior to his birth, his parents lost five boys to a fire. And when Taylor was 18, another fire claimed the life of his own brother.

This led him to hang out with the wrong crowd, and eventually a prison sentence that lasted for five years. It was during his incarceration that he had a redemptive experience with God, which inspired him to start writing poetry.
