Political figures, including Senator JD Vance, have irresponsibly amplified false narratives accusing Haitian migrants of stealing pets and wildlife. These claims have been thoroughly debunked by local authorities, yet the damage continues.

Today, the Global Justice & Freedom Network aims to redirect the conversation by shedding light on Haiti’s remarkable legacy as a defender of freedom worldwide. A new op-ed published by the organization’s founder outlines Haiti’s historical contributions and the steep price it has paid for its defiance of colonial and imperial powers. It also highlights the need for communities to recognize the truth about Haitian immigrants, moving away from harmful stereotypes and toward an understanding of Haiti’s role in shaping the values of freedom and justice.

Haiti’s story is one of resistance, resilience, and revolution. In 1791, the Haitian Revolution saw enslaved Africans rise against the French colonial regime, ultimately defeating Napoleon’s forces and becoming the first Black republic in the world. Haiti was the first nation in the Americas to abolish slavery and went on to support liberation movements in South America, aiding Simón Bolívar in his quest to free six countries from Spanish rule. Haiti’s solidarity with Greece during their War of Independence, and its role as a sanctuary for Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi persecution during World War II, are just a few examples of the nation’s unwavering commitment to freedom.

The 1914 looting of Haiti’s gold reserves by U.S. Marines, orchestrated by Citibank, marked the beginning of a 19-year American occupation. These historical injustices have had lasting impacts on Haiti’s economic and political sovereignty, compounded by further U.S. interventions, including the 2004 coup that ousted Haiti’s first democratically elected leader, Jean-Bertrand Aristide.
