The bacteria can survive on some surfaces, like towels, razors, and furniture, for hours, days, or even weeks, according to the CDC.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention describe Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) as a type of staph that can be resistant to several antibiotics. The agency warns that anyone can get a MRSA infection or carry MRSA. The risks increase for people with hospitalizations or nursing home stays, skin-to-skin contact with others, and exposure to crowded and unhygienic places.

The bacteria can survive on some surfaces, like towels, razors, and furniture, for hours, days, or even weeks, according to the CDC. MRSA can spread to people who touch a contaminated surface and cause infections if it gets into a cut, scrape, or open wound.

In the past, most MRSA infections have been associated with hospitalization or other healthcare-associated risk factors. However, in more recent years, health care providers have observed MRSA infections in an increasing number of people who lack traditional healthcare-associated risk factors. These people appear to have community-associated (CA-MRSA) infections.

“Since 2009, World MRSA Awareness Month has taken place each October,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “It’s important that the public recognizes the seriousness of these infections and that MRSA is no longer just an issue in hospitals and long-term care facilities. Today it is a potential problem anywhere that experiences crowding, skin-to-skin contact, and shared equipment or supplies. This could include daycare centers, schools, universities, athletic facilities, military barracks, and even jails and prisons.”

In Puerto Rico and across the Caribbean, Zimmetry Environmental is dedicated to mitigating exposure risks to MRSA and other pathogens. They offer infection control and environmental testing services that can be instrumental for confirming cleaning and disinfection procedures are effective. These tests can also be helpful for pinpointing the source of a MRSA outbreak if one has already occurred. Zimmetry has even sponsored an educational video about World MRSA Awareness Month that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/yr63zHw3y14
