Judith Perkins’ Latest Novel of a Boy Coming-of-Age with a Whole Town Enchants Reviewers with Its Vibrant Historical Setting
Within just a few years, Judith Perkins has been actively publishing historical fiction novels that demonstrate the intertwining stories of different people. Her latest one, “The Emancipation of William Jones Jr.,” tells a heartwarming story about a little boy who is abandoned by a selfish mother, only for him to grow up loved by his extended family and community. Reviews have come in noting how Perkins matched her titular character’s growth a whole town’s historical development.
“It is focused on stewardship, the consequences of people’s behavior, and the importance of cooperation.” – Clarion Review
Even at the age of 80, Judith Perkins has been excitedly active in publishing her works of historical fiction. While she was born and raised in Oregon, she has been fascinated by the history of American towns for quite some time. She and her husband went on a motorhome tour of over 40 states once they retired from retail, offering her an adventurous glimpse of so many hidden corners across America.
These experiences and more are what color the stories in her books, including the most recent one titled “The Emancipation of William Jones, Jr.”
The story follows William, a little boy who is born to a mother who did not want children, and wanted them less after his father died at sea. William is then cruelly abandoned in a Washington town where his extended family lives. Appalled by this treatment, members of that family decide to raise him and give him the love his mother did not. Among the many humble gifts he’s given include a little puppy named Patch, and the novel follows the five years William spends growing up.
Kirkus Reviews commends Perkins’ narrative for its “tender and sad moments that will endear William to readers; his succinct summations of his abuse are heart-wrenching, and his love for his puppy, Patch, is a true joy.”
A review by BlueInk Review praises the book’s lifelike historical accuracy: “The events of the time, such as the introduction of cars, contribute to a colorful setting, as do the signature characters of the time, including the local town doctor, the kindly schoolteacher, and the friendly Palouse and Nez Perce Indians who trade goods with the townspeople.”
