Like the famous cherry blossom season, Japan’s autumn leaves - known as koyo - are also renowned and are ready to make their seasonal debut.

The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) has updated its forecast of the dates and locations of the autumn leaf season. Starting in the colder areas of northern Hokkaido, vibrant shades of orange, yellow and red will stretch across the country, moving down to central and southern Japan.

This fall, the leaves are expected to begin their transformation starting in Kushiro in Hokkaido, on or around October 16. The colors will move down to Nagano around November 12, with Tokyo seeing the leaves change starting November 28 and Osaka on December 1. The last to see fall’s colorful offerings will be the city of Kagoshima, starting December 15.

Traveling to Japan is ideal through the fall and winter seasons, as visitors can take advantage of the cooler temperatures and the various fall festivals focused around the harvest season, while winter offers stunning illuminations and winter sports for the more adventurous travelers, as well as fewer tourists.
