While lead-based paints continue to be the most common source of exposure for most children, exposure hazards can also come from contaminated drinking water, foods, soil, and other sources.

There are approximately three million households across the United States with children under six years old that have lead exposure hazards warns the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). That’s the bad news, the good news is lead poisoning is entirely preventable.

To help reduce childhood exposure to lead by increasing lead poisoning prevention awareness, October 20th through the 26th is recognized as National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week (NLPPW). For the past 25 years, NLPPW has been an annual event promoted by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and EPA. “Bright futures begin lead-free” is the theme for this year’s NLPPW.

“There is no safe blood level in children, according to the CDC,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “Even low levels have been shown to affect a child’s learning capacity, ability to pay attention, and academic achievement. While lead-based paints continue to be the most common source of exposure for most children, exposure hazards can also come from contaminated drinking water, foods, soil, and other sources.”

Zimmetry proudly supports the efforts of NLPPW each year. Their environmental and industrial hygiene professionals offer comprehensive lead testing, consulting, and training services. These resources are available in Puerto Rico and throughout the Caribbean to protect children, families, and workers. Their expertise also helps to keep companies and institutions in compliance with health and safety regulations.

Several years ago, Zimmetry sponsored an educational video about National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/YfaJoRrOpI4
