How we Got Active for Good

WEBWIRE

Over the summer we launched the ‘Getting Active for Good’ campaign, encouraging our people to move more, whilst raising money for charity along the way.

Why did we do it?

In June of this year, Pentland Brands signed a joint statement with the World Federation of the Sporting Goods Industry (WFSGI) and the World Health Organisation (WHO), calling for urgent action on levels of inactivity on adults.

The statement was based on worrying data that 31% of adults are inactive and are not meeting the recommended levels of physical activity (just 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week). You can read the statement here.

As a business that aims to help our consumers get more active, we wanted to lead the charge and encourage our employees to get more active.

The Challenge

We challenged our people to move for 150 minutes each week, for five weeks.

To motivate everyone to get active for good, we assigned a charity pot that was unlocked the more they moved. By reaching 150 minutes, prizes could be won, and money was added to each location’s charity pot! The money raised by each location would then be donated to a charity of their choice.

However, the competition didn’t end there. The locations that recorded the most active minutes and furthest distance travelled were awarded medals, which added more money to the pot. Individuals were also rewarded on the same basis.

The Results

The challenge was a roaring success, raising a huge amount for charity, and improving our employees’ attitudes to exercise.

During the five weeks our global team travelled 28,624km, which is the same travelling from the UK to Perth (Australia) and back! Collectively we moved for 4814 hours and 43 minutes, which is the same as watching all the Harry Potter movies back-to-back 240 times.

At the end of the challenge, 91.5% of those who took part said they would take part in more regular exercise in future.

Thank you to everyone who took part in the campaign. Whether they completed the challenge or not, we couldn’t be prouder of Team Pentland Brands!
