“Mariachi Girl” - A Bilingual Musical Touring Ventura County Community College Campuses & High Schools
Following up the sold-out production of “Los Braceros de Buena Vista,” ÁNIMO Theatre Company will stage “Mariachi Girl” in Camarillo, Oxnard, and Santa Paula, beginning on November 15 at 7:30 PM at Santa Paula High School.

In partnership with CSU Channel Islands, ÁNIMO Theatre Company will stage the hit musical “Mariachi Girl” on Ventura County college campuses and high schools. The musical will be staged on November 15th at Santa Paula High School at 7: 30 PM, with performances also scheduled for November 22nd at Oxnard College and December 4th at Rancho Campana High School in Camarillo.
Written by Roxanne Schroeder-Arce with music and lyrics by Hector Martinez Morales, this coming of age bilingual musical follows young Cita’s dreams of following in her father’s footsteps to become a Mariachi, but runs counter to his traditional, patriarchal roots. Through the eyes of a young girl, the musical explores cultural stereotypes and assimilation in the United States. It is a heartwarming story that celebrates cultural identity and promotes a positive self-image for young girls.
ÁNIMO Theatre Company brings untold stories to promote awareness and appreciation of diverse cultures. Shows such as “Los Braceros de Buena Vista,” “¡Ay Chihuahua!,” and now “Mariachi Girl” share encouraging stories of the sacrifices and dreams of immigrants.
One of the primary goals for “Mariachi Girl” is to help outreach & recruitment efforts at CSUCI by adding relevant storyline elements and begin building a pipeline of students from local high schools to enroll at CSUCI.
“Mariachi Girl” is directed by Miguel Orozco with musical direction by Juan Carlos Ozuna, featuring music by Mariachi Águilas de Oxnard. The musical will debut Eileen San Juan, a young talent from Oxnard’s Inlakech Cultural Arts Center. Set up as a theatrical production class for CSUCI’s Theatre and Performance Studies program, “Mariachi Girl” features CSUCI students as actors and stage crew, and home grown talent from Oxnard College.
With Spanish sub-titles, the musical offers entertainment for the whole family and encourages families to communicate and support each other.
