Jo Ellen Capps-Layne Gives Voice to Those Who Struggle to Speak for Themselves in Her Book “Laughter at Dawn”
A person’s well-being consists of both physical and mental health. “Laughter at Dawn,” a book written by Jo Ellen Capps-Layne, sheds light on a matter that is more than often overlooked: someone’s mental health.
“The stigma of mental health. I enjoyed the story line of this book. I could identify with some of the problems of the staff and residents in a mental health facility. The stigma that hangs over someone with mental issues and the staff that truly want to change societies view.” – Amazon review by Deborah
Mental health matters just as much as physical health. Despite the modernization of times and society itself, every community member still needs to do a lot of work to ensure that mental health is no longer overlooked and is taken at the same level everyone does for their physical health.
Brilliant author Jo Ellen Capps-Layne shares that her novel “Laughter at Dawn” is based on her thirty-seven years of experience as a social worker in the mental health field. With her valuable knowledge and wisdom, she has genuinely encapsulated within the book a realistic glimpse of what it is like to live and struggle with a psychiatric condition.
In this work of general fiction, the story revolves around the life of Abigail (Abby) Thornton, an intellectually disabled young woman who is suffering from an undiagnosed psychiatric condition. Abby has experienced residing in several foster placements where she has sadly faced abuse, which all happened before she came to live in Greenway Developmental Center.
As she moves into Greenway Developmental Center, Abby starts suffering from hallucinations - the kind that causes her to hurt not only herself but also the people around her. As this happens, Greenway Developmental Center’s Director, Belle Farthing, spends her every waking hour trying to get rid of Abby.
From there, Abby’s life challenges continue to escalate. From hallucinations to fire to murder to strangulation. Soon, a court case lingers, and Abby’s psychologist, Sally McGraw, becomes her advocate and defender. Along with Christine Connelly, Abby’s social worker, she and Sally McGraw work together to take legal action against the State of Virginia for not providing Abby with the care and placement she needs.
People like Abby deserve the utmost support as they journey through life. Along with support, kindness is a must.
