HNTB wins ACEC Florida Grand Award for Brightline East-West Connector
Project enhances connectivity and sets a new standard for sustainable transportation in Florida
HNTB, a leading infrastructure solutions firm, has been recognized with a Grand Award by the American Council of Engineering Companies of Florida for its work on the Brightline Florida East-West Connector project. HNTB provided final design and program management on the project.
HNTB partnered with Brightline Florida to deliver the East-West Connector, a private intercity passenger railroad system spanning 38 route miles between Cocoa, FL, and Orlando International Airport. The transformative infrastructure project provided the final link between Miami and Orlando and included the design and construction of 32 new bridges, comprehensive grading and drainage systems, advanced communications and signal layouts, and extensive utility relocations. The tracks, designed for speeds up to 150 mph, are poised to accommodate future technological advancements, ensuring long-term viability and efficiency. The project opened to passengers in September 2023.
“We are incredibly honored to have partnered with Brightline Florida on the East-West Connector project,” said George Gilhooley, HNTB’s East Florida office leader and senior vice president. “This recognition from ACEC Florida is a testament to the innovative spirit and dedication of our teams. Brightline’s vision for a connected Florida has truly come to life, and we are grateful to be part of this transformative journey.”
Brightline Florida is expected to deliver a $6.4 billion impact to Florida’s economy, creating more than 2,000 post-construction jobs and removing 72 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually. Nearly 5.5 million riders are projected in 2024.
“The East-West Connector project has been a remarkable journey of engineering excellence and innovation,” said John Hornbeck, HNTB’s project director for the East-West Connector. “This project enhances connectivity across Florida and sets a new standard for sustainable and efficient transportation solutions. We are proud of the positive impact it will have on the communities we serve.”
ACEC Florida recognized five projects as Grand Award winners, including the Henry E. Kinney Tunnel Improvements and Pedestrian Plaza Project, for which HNTB provided intelligent technology systems design services. The Grand and Honor Awards, along with the announcement of the ACEC Florida Grand Conceptor Award winner, will be presented during a banquet on February 7, 2025, in Orlando.
