Children’s Book Author Gisela De Leon Teaches the Value of Bonding with Grandparents in High-Flying Holiday-Themed Adventure Story
Children’s books about spending quality family time are a dime a dozen, but those about specific relationships certainly stand out more. That’s one of the reasons why Gisela De Leon published “My Grandma and I,” a children’s story where a grandson bonds with his amazing air pilot grandmother as they head off to islands themed around the months of the year. It’s a colorful, two-for-one package that teaches children the importance of learning from one’s elders.

To many people in Fort Lauderdale, Gisela De Leon is just another resident real estate broker. Yet to those closer to her, they will also know that she is the mother of three and grandmother to thirteen kids.
That big grandmother experience is the main source of inspiration for a children’s book that she actually published. Its title is “My Grandma and I: Our First Trip to Calendar Islands.”
The story follows a boy who is about to join his airplane-flying grandmother on a colorful trip to the Calendar Islands. However, it turns out these islands are named quite literally! Each one is themed after a particular month, along with various major holidays and celebrations they each have.
Every island teaches a different lesson, yet each one emphasizes the importance of grandchildren bonding with their grandparents (as well as family in general). After all, these holiday celebrations are just the occasion for bringing all loved ones together.
“My Grandma and I: Our First Trip to Calendar Islands” is a book that teaches the importance of the elderly and what they pass on to younger generations. At the same time though, the colorful illustrations of each Calendar Island playfully capture their holiday themes.
Gisela De Leon is currently considering some promotional plans for the book (such as features on book fairs and doing some online talks). Yet at the end of the day, she simply hopes that her little book project can help families better appreciate their grandparents whenever they can.
