The 2024 Official Selection around the world

Following their world premieres at the 77th Festival de Cannes last May, the films from the Official Selection have continued to be screened at festivals and cinemas, as well as meet-and-greet events with audiences and filmmakers. From the Croisette to screens all across the globe, these works continue to make their mark on the world of cinema. As the 2025 edition approaches, the Festival looks back with pride at the filmmakers who have earned significant acclaim since walking up the red steps.

The 2024 Selection

Since triumphing at Cannes, where it took home the Jury Prize and the Award for Best Actress for its female ensemble, Jacques Audiard’s latest film, Emilia Pérez, has maintained its winning streak in world cinema, already scooping five European Awards and four Golden Globes. This exceptional start to the season bodes well for its upcoming nominations at the Oscars, where it will represent France in March. On the awards circuit, it shared the spotlight with Sean Baker’s Palme d’or–winning Anora, as well as Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance, which won the Award for Best Screenplay. More generally, with over 1,550 nominations and around 454 awards to date, films from the 2024 Official Selection have been exceptionally well received on the international stage.

At The Box Office

In cinemas, Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre de la Patellière’s film, presented Out of Competition at Cannes, broke box-office records. With over 9 million tickets sold, Le Comte de Monte-Cristo (The Count of Monte Cristo), starring Pierre Niney, joined the ranks of the top 20 most-viewed French films in December. This landmark success was further enhanced by outstanding performances from several other arthouse films screened at Cannes last May, particularly in the Un Certain Regard Selection, where Straume (Flow), L’Histoire de Souleymane (Souleymane’s Story), and Vingt Dieux (Holy Cow) stole the show.

And Critics

Once again this year, film critics have commended the films selected by the Festival, sharing their top picks across the globe. While several awards are yet to be announced, Anora, The Substance, and Straume (Flow), as well as All We Imagine as Light, Payal Kapadia’s Indian film that won the Cannes Grand Prix, have all received rave reviews across the pond.

In France, the Académie des Lumières will present the 30^th Lumière Awards on 20 January. Half of the 34 nominated pictures are feature films that were screened at Cannes last May. With six nominations, Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez is marginally ahead of Boris Lojkine’s L’Histoire de Souleymane (Souleymane’s Story) and Alain Guiraudie’s Miséricorde (Misericordia) (five nominations apiece). This trio of feature-length films will be competing for the Lumière Award for Best Film alongside Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine as Light and Arnaud and Jean-Marie Larrieu’s Le Roman de Jim (Jim’s Story), all from the Official Selection.
